Hainan Province, in the south, boasts a beautiful coastline. The island, rising from the vast South China Sea, has a total population of 6,150,800 and a population density of 181 people per square km (1987 figures). Many ethnic minorities inhabit Hainan; the Li, Miao and Hui. Although established in 1987, Hainan Province has attracted numerous visitors at home and from abroad. It is located in the tropical region and rich in rainfall. Travelers who come here can not only enjoy the natural scenery but also taste the delicious local food. Hainan is also known as the 'Hawaii of Orient.'

Dongjiao Coconut Plantation: this is noted as one of the most famous tourist spots in Hainan Province, famous for a graceful and picturesque environment. It is near Qinglan Harbour and has 500,000 coconut trees of various species, such as red coconut, high coconut, water coconut and blue coconut, etc. Apart from coconut, there is a beach rich in lobsters, prawns, groupers and abalones. It is a perfect place for travellers to rest. 

Sanya Attractions: situated on the southernmost tip of Hainan Province, Sanya is a famous tourist attraction in Hainan. It boasts marvellous mountains, blue sea, brook rivers, and a favorable climate. As a unique tropical oceanic city, Sanya always leaves tourists with a good impression. 

Tianya Haijiao: Tianya Haojiao is 20 km from Sanya city, and literally means 'taking you to the end of heaven and earth' (which is related to a beautiful ancient love story). It is a gorgeous bay with fresh air, clear water and coconut palms. Chinese characters of Tianya, Haijiao and Nantian Yizhu are engraved on the rocks. Tianya Haijiao is now a popular honeymoon estination for many young couples.

Dadonghai Bay: located 3 km southeast of downtown Sanya, Dadonghai Bay is the most tropical seaside holiday area in Hainan. It features a crescent-shaped beach with a clear blue sea, white sand and green trees: an ideal spot for diving, beach sports, bathing and sunbathing. Dadonghai has spring-like weather all year round.

Luhuitou Penisula: situated 5 km south of city, Luhuitou Penisula is considered one of the famous beaches in Sanya. A walk along the beach leads to the cliff with a deer-shaped peak extending towards the sea. A local legend tells of a young man who went after a deer on this hill for two days. When he became too exhausted, the deer suddenly stopped and looked back at him before turning into a beautiful girl. They fell in love and married. Their descendants lived on the peninsula for several generations and become today's Li ethnic groups.

Asian Dragon Bay (Yalong Wan): this bay is situated on Hainan's southermost coast, 25 km from the bustling resort town of Sanya. It has a balmy climate all year round. 
From the beach, it is possible to enjoy a view of rolling hills and deep blue seas. Just a short distance from the beach, the coral reefs have a multitude of tropical fish. The water here is so clear that you can see to a depth of up to 10 metres!

Specialities:

Food: Visitors can taste a large variety of fresh seafood as well as other delicious dishes such as Boiled Wenchang Chicken, braised Dongshan Lamb, steamed Jiaji Duck and Hele Crab. There are also lots of varieties of ethnic food like Baoluo Feng and Coconut Meat Dumpling. 

Shopping:  
Three popular shopping places in Sanya are Walking Street, Jingrun Pearl Factory, Sanya No. 1 Market. Surrounded by blue water on three sides, the city teems with a multitude of products that make wonderful souvenirs and gifts for friends and relatives. Recommended are seawater pearls, crystals, Li Brocade (a featured cloth handmade by the Li people using cotton from inside kapok capsules), and Coconut Shell Sculptures (carved on coconut shells into various figures). You can also buy pretty decorations and handicrafts made of shells or trumpet shells: a gift from the sea.
