Nightlife Experience in Sanlitun-the most popular place in Beijing
Out drinking in Sanlitun!
On Saturday night I had the chance to check out Beijing's legendary nightlife! Some Chinese friends were having a birthday party so we headed to Sanlitun bar district in the east of the city.
The Sanlitun area is a well-known place for hanging out and partying, and is absolutely full of bars and places to drink. There're all sorts of places there - you've got the full range, from China Doll-style up-market bars to little drinking holes with cheap beer and loud music.
We met up in a small place down a little street - I'm not sure I could find it again! Inside there was a great atmosphere with lots of people letting their hair down and Western music playing. Chinese bars usually have a fun, relaxed mood going, and people like to drink Tsingtao beer, rice wine or Western whiskey.
Chinese drinking games
Although I don't speak much Chinese that was fine because everyone was very friendly and I made friends very quickly. I also learned a couple of Chinese drinking games which will come in handy in the future!
There's a game played with dice and a cup, where each of you has five dice and you have to guess how much the other player has. I completely didn't understand it so I guessed most of the time and did pretty well! We also played 'Rock, Paper, Scissors' which everyone in the West knows, except unlike the playgrounds in England we had to drink every time we lost.
Another game - and my favourite - is where a group of people take turns to shout out numbers. One person says 'Start!' or 'Start one!' and everyone then has to shout out 'Two!', 'Three!', 'Four!' and so on until you reach the maximum number (however many players there are). If you shout at the same time as someone else you have to drink, and the last person to shout drinks too.
Birthday cake goes everywhere!
At one point a birthday cake came out, the bar played 'Happy Birthday' over the speakers and the birthday boy had to blow out the candles. I wasn't expecting what happened next though - everyone picked up the cake and threw it at each other! People were getting covered in cake and icing everywhere I looked, and the birthday guy ended up absolutely covered from head to toe. It was great fun.
Beijing has got a great nightlife going on and any visitor to the city should definitely check it out!
