Culture and Arts workshops are a unique opportunity for our participants to learn and experience some of China¡¯s traditional skills and crafts. All of workshops will be taught and demonstrated by professionals of each craft. The workshops will normally be held for one to two hours.

  Learning Chinese Culture & Arts  
 

 

 

Calligraphy workshop:
Learn techniques of Chinese brush painting. Practice their basics of calligraphy. Participants can learn and practice Chinese words and take home their very own Chinese character paintings. Classes introduce a variety of calligraphy styles and features, participants then focus on perfecting one style of this ancient art form.

 

 

Chinese Water-colour Painting:
Participants will be given a workshop by an experienced and renowned artist from Beijing University of Culture and Arts. This class introduces elements of the traditional art of Chinese water-colour painting. This creative and fun workshop results in beautiful pieces of art as participants can exhibit their individual styles.

 

 

TCM-Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese Massage and traditional Chinese Medicine: Classes introduce the ancient Chinese concepts and beliefs of what constitutes the human body and illness, and include diagnostic methods and treatments using herbal medicine and massage. This is good for participants to understand the relation between Martial Arts and medicine.



Classical Chinese Musical Instruments
Chinese traditional music is famous for its gentle and elegant sounds. There are many instruments played by the artists such as GuZeng, Erfu, Pipa, Yangqing and Flute. They are the main musical instruments played in many famous Tai Chi music and Kung Fu movies such as the ¡°Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon¡± ¡°Once Upon A Time in China and ¡°Hero¡± etc.

Paper-cut
Paper-cut is one of China's most popular and characteristic folk arts. It takes paper as the material and scissors or an engraving knife as the tool. In Chinese culture paper-cuts symbolise the idea of blessedness, luck and fortune. Most Chinese families use them as window decorations and patterns also for religious and decorative purposes. Our participants will be taught by the paper-cut experts.



Ma Jiang Workshop
This game requires four players and is played like Jim Rummy. Instead of cards, tiles are used. The aim is to discard and claim tiles using a ¡°hold¡± and the game goes around in a circle so that each player gets a turn to organise their tiles into a winning hand. A local Beijing expert will give a brief lesson, and will show the basic tricks and explain the many different ways of playing, and demonstrate the most common methods of cheating.



Dumpling Making (Jiaozi workshops)
Participants can learn how to make the famous Chinese cuisine-Jiao Zi all by themselves. Jiao Zi is the traditional food in northern China. Since it sounds like the phrase ¡°transforming of a new year¡±, Chinese people regard eating Jiaozi as an essential part of celebrating the Chinese New Year. This time, under the instruction of the assistants, the participants will make the Jiaozi from scratch and then sample the work as well



Introduction to Chinese Language
The lesson is specifically designed for beginners. It focuses on teaching basic Chinese vocabulary, sentence structures and grammar using everyday topics. Phonetics, tone exercises and drills ensure that participants learn the correct pronunciation and intonation from the beginning. It is particularly useful during our visit in China, and for participants who wish to train in China in the future.

 


Chinese Song Workshop
Participants will be provided a chance to learn some of the most famous Chinese Kung Fu songs such as the theme song of ¡°once upon a time in China¡± and Pop songs such as ¡°Tian Mi Mi¡±., and China¡¯s national song. This is also the preparation for the Karaoke Night.

 


Traditional Seals & Chops
Our unique Chop workshop is an ideal opportunity for participants to learn and understand this ancient handcraft. Participants will be taught by local experts to make a piece of seal with your name in Chinese or English, so it can be used on your work on the painting or calligraphy workshops. Schools or associations can use this chance to make an official school seal, which can be used for grading and certificate.

Chinese Knots (Zhongguojie)
In Chinese language, "knot" has the meanings of reunion, friendliness, warm, marriage, love etc. In addition, "knot" and "luck, felicity" have the same pronunciation, so Chinese knots are often used to express some good wish including happy, prosper, love and no evil. This beautiful handcraft will be introduced in the culture & arts workshops by local experts, you can learn basic pieces of this handcraft, and take it as souvenirs back to home.


 

 

Chinese Embroidery
Embroidery was also used as a means of decorating silk clothing and for silk flags and banners as a means of denoting rank or station. From the magnificent Dragon Robe worn by Emperors to the popular embroidery seen in today's fashions, embroidery adds so much pleasure to our life and our culture. Our workshop will provide a brief introduction of the embroidery, and the prepared learning materials will be given for your experience on learning how to embroider a basic picture.


 

 

Kite Making
Kites were invented by the Chinese people over 2000 years ago. About in the 12th century, Chinese kite spread to the West, and the oriental and Western kite culture was formed after years of development. In this process, Chinese traditional culture integrated with the kite craft, and finally formed the kite culture with unique characteristics. In the workshop, a brief introduction will be given on how to making this crafts (structuring, paperhanging, color drawing, and flying).

Chinese Cookery Workshops
Our cookery workshop combines a series of cookery demonstrations with food related to China. Participants have an opportunity to take part in the demonstrations and to taste the food that is prepared. We also provide cookery course books with extensive notes on Chinese cookery. One of dishes will be selected to learn from fried noodles, egg fried rice to vegetable dishes such as mixed fried vegetable and garlic broccoli, as well as the popular sweet sour chicken or pork.




Chinese Chess Playing
There are three forms of chess which are being played regularly in China. Xiangqi (Elephant Chess), Weiqi (Go Chess). Our participants will have the opportunity to learn this ancient Chinese game in the specially arranged workshops.




Chinese Poker Games
Poker card games are also popular pastime in China. It has been played in the Asian community for many years. As most of card games, Chinese poker is a game in which both luck and skill are equally needed to win. There are many types of card games played with different rules in different regions and ethnics in China. Now 2 types of games are mostly played among friends, relatives and in community centers.
